1) Why do cultural studies theorists separate words with capital letters from those without, even when the words in question are not proper nouns (e.g., woman vs. Woman)? Explain why we do this (i.e., what is the convention a shorthand for), and what significance it has. (30-50 words)
It is the shorthand of what it is traditionally meant to by the idea of the certain item that is being spoken of. Lower case would could mean any random woman, whereas the Woman means the stay at home traditional mother, much like we could see on the cover of Good Housekeeping. There is also the example of art vs Art. "Art" may be seen as paintings which could be worth thousands at a showcase or "art" with Duchamp's Fountain, which came across as making fun of everyone else in the Gallery by saying well hey art is "piss" and I'll make it what i want, this was still portrayed as art. Therefore it shows us what it means to be that specific word but using the capital.
